Today’s generation can start an era where society and nature flourish side by side – the symbiocene. We believe that education can be an instrument of profound social change. That’s why we’re launching the Generation symbiocene – a year-long educational programme for people aged 17-23.

Today’s generation can start an era where society and nature flourish side by side – the symbiocene. We believe that education can be an instrument of profound social change.
Shall we go back to how things were before COVID-19, carry on the same way and hope that the current problems will somehow resolve themselves? To us, that makes no sense. We face an ongoing climate and environmental crisis that is bringing uncertainty and political tension to our society. We live in a world of inequality, where the eight richest people own more than the poorest half of humanity. In a fragmented society, coming to a mutual understanding is increasingly difficult.
The conflicts we must deal with every day now include military aggression that is happening only a few hundred kilometres away. The Russian invasion of Ukraine came unexpectedly and reminded us that we live in a world full of realities that are difficult to accept. This is the age of capitalism, a neoliberal system based on the pressure for growth and the constant increase in productivity. But it is also a time in which we can set in motion a dramatic and thorough change of this system, heal our society, start making new mistakes, change the meaning of our lives and restore functional relationships.
We are launching the Symbiocene Generation Academy because we believe that the current Anthropocene epoch (based on ideas of unlimited growth and human dominance) is heading towards disintegration or self-destruction. That is why we want to seek and shape a new era – a symbiocene – based on mutual care and cooperation.
With our programme, we want to support a generation that can rediscover harmony between human culture and the rest of life on Earth. It is only possible through seeking dialogue – to tackle the challenges we face, which go beyond the climate crisis, we must work together. It makes sense for us to try. Let us work together to create a dignified life for all within the limits of our planet.
The Generation Symbiocene Academy is developed by the people working at NaZemi. Our mission is to create a chance for every person on Earth to live a happy, dignified and sustainable life. We do so by promoting a fair distribution of resources and power, mutual understanding, and the imagination to see the world from different perspectives.
The project was supported by the State Environmental Fund of the Czech Republic.
